The figures of the sector are so impressive that they make other crops feel jealous. They include very high forest cover rates, 27%, on average, of all tobacco growers’ holdings are covered with forests. The grower awareness work conducted by the farm technicians toward this end, is complemented by means of seminars in the communities. The move consists in giving directives on the exclusive use of wood of legal origin for their curing-barn needs, preferably planted by the growers themselves, ensuring great savings and huge environmental gains.
Preservation of Soil and Water
The companies give the integrated growers the guidelines on different soil and water preservation practices. If followed, soil erosion and silting of water courses will be avoided, thus reducing the pollution levels of nearby rivers.
The Empty Chemical Container Collection Program
This first-of-its-kind program has been conducted since the year 2000, through widely publicized pre-defined itineraries, under the support of Afubra, 2.3 thousand collection points in the rural areas of 563 tobacco growing municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina are visited on a yearly basis.
