Brazil is a world leader in tobacco exports
Meeting the most exacting international standards, Brazil is the second-largest producer of tobacco in the world and leader in exports since 1993, thanks to product quality and integrity. In 2015, tobacco accounted for 1.14% of total Brazilian exports, with $ 2,19 billion shipped.
Of the total production of 692 thousand metric tons registered in the 2014/2015 crop year, 85% was destined for the foreign market. The main Brazilian client over the period was the European Union with 43% of total shipments in 2015, followed by the Far East (25%), North America (11%), Eastern Europe (8%), Africa/Middle East (7%) and Latin America (6%). For South Brazil, tobacco is one of the most significant agroindustrial activities. In Rio Grande do Sul, tobacco represented a 9.2% share in total exports; in Santa Catarina, 7.1%.
